Brown, Publisher and Editor When I first started writing about home modifications and adaptations to help care for aging relatives, the idea of universal design (designing homes that age with us) was a new concept. Nine years later, as I researched information for this issue, I was astounded by the amount of available resources; it’s now easy to find information about modifying a home so that it helps, rather than hinders, the caregiving experience. It’s true that there is no place like home. But, it’s also true that our homes are built for the healthy. We don’t give our home’s layout a second thought until we have to decide which room is best for our bed-bound family members. Maybe the bedroom upstairs, across from the only full bathroom in the home, would work best. But, up the stairs means isolation from family gathering and activities. Maybe the dining room, even though it offers less privacy, is a better solution? Sometimes, home modifications help us find the best solution. In this issue, we introduce you to family caregivers who have made modifications in their homes to accommodate their care recipients. We’ll tell you about resources that can help as you decide how best to modify your home.
